Actionable mission

Our guiding principle is that the commitment to sustainability has to come from NOVASBIO. We have to re-envision the status quo to enable our customers and partners to choose more sustainable solutions.

Our actionable mission is to re-envision and continuously re-assess the sustainability of our product life cycle from raw materials to final product consumption at a recycling facility or landfill.

For each of the product life cycles, we ask:

  • How necessary is this?
  • How can we make this more sustainable?
  • What will we implement NOW? And what is the impact across the product life cycle of our changes?
  • Iterate through these questions over and over because sustainability should never end.
Our goal is that a greener NOVASBIO enables more sustainable research!

In 2023, we launched our refill rack system for non-filtered pipette tips.

  • This reduced the recycle/landfill burden of empty racks that can easily be reused

Reduce, reduce, reduce!

Reduce unnecessary packaging and distribution burden

Product packaging is a primary source of waste, not to mention a significant part of total shipping weight. Wherever possible, we are redesigning to reduce unnecessary packaging and subsequently the landfill and recycling burdens.

  • In 2021, we re-examined the packaging of our PCR plates. Our packaging was fully recyclable, but it takes energy to produce anything and energy to recycle it too. So, we wanted to make sure anything we used in our packaging was truly necessary. Packaging materials composed 27 – 35% of the gross weight of fully packaged product. We were “double” packing the plates in bags and then in chipboard boxes. So, we removed the chipboard boxes to reduce the packaging burden by 36% to 67% on these plates. This not only saved nearly 1 ton of chipboard paper annually, but also the energy consumed in distributing that 1 ton of chipboard.

Remove unnecessary products

It is necessary to look at our products from the impact on the environment. Just because we can doesn’t mean we should!

    • In 2022, we decided to not manufacture colored microcentrifuge tubes. While having a rainbow of color options is eye-catching and may be partially useful for the end user, the environmental impact for us was not justifiable. Colored consumables come from color additives to polypropylene.
      • Color pigment additives are generally more harmful to the environment than non-pigmented polypropylene
      • The manufacturing process of colored polypropylene inherently involves more wastage and unusable byproduct
      • Colored polypropylene is also challenge for most recycling and material recovery facilities
      • Our 2024 goal is to extend this to our pipette tips. Unfortunately, yellow 200ul and blue 1mL tips are still a thing in labs. Yes the color coding helps identify the tip volume, but it is not necessary.  We are pushing our partners to replace yellow and blue tips with clear tips. 80% our partners and customers have already made the switch!

  • A greener lab equates to a greener world. So we request our customers to support us and forego your colored microcentrifuge tubes and pipette tips wherever possible.

Operational efficiency:

Across all product lines, our goal is to manufacture products with minimal environmental impact. This means pursuing high standards for lean manufacturing operations, reduced waste, and improved energy and water conversation.

  • 100% of all polypropylene byproduct from our PCR production is recycled! Some of this recycled material goes into our other product lines.
  • Our deep well plates are made from 30% recycled materials
  • Our pipette tips are made from 30% recycled materials
  • Our pipette tip racks are made from up to 100% recycled materials
